OpenAI restructures around Sol/Terra/Luna tiers, ships ChatGPT Work

OpenAI has reorganized its model lineup around three durable capability tiers — Sol, Terra, and Luna — replacing the more ad hoc naming of previous releases. Alongside the restructuring, the company launched ChatGPT Work, an agentic system built on GPT-5.6 designed to execute complex, multi-hour projects across a team's files and connected apps rather than answering one prompt at a time.
Pricing
The tier change came with a meaningful price cut: starting July 30, GPT-5.6 Luna costs 80% less than its predecessor tier, and GPT-5.6 Terra costs 20% less. For teams running high-volume workloads, that's a direct line-item change worth checking against current usage.
What's being retired
The lineup change comes with a cleanup of older models. GPT-4.5 leaves ChatGPT on a 30-day sunset, and o3 follows on August 26, 2026 after a 90-day sunset window. Codex users signed in with a ChatGPT account lose access to GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini on August 31, 2026 — though both remain available on the API and in Codex sessions authenticated with an API key, so pipeline-level integrations aren't affected.
For teams building on top of the API rather than the ChatGPT product, the practical takeaway is to audit any hardcoded model-tier references before the sunset dates land.
